OpenView

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

HP OpenView is a Hewlett Packard product range consisting of an extensive portfolio of network and systems management products.

It is most commonly described as a suite of software applications which allow large-scale system and network management of an organization's IT assets. It includes hundreds of optional modules from HP as well as thousands of third parties which connect within the well-defined framework and communicate with one another.

[edit] History

Historically, the foundation product was Network Node Manager (NNM), and this provided GUI services for other products, which integrated with it. Nowadays, NNM is generally used in its own right to manage networks, possibly in conjunction with other products, such as Cisco CiscoWorks.

HP has a history of acquiring network management software companies. In 2004 it bought Novadigm and its Radia suite; in 2005, it acquired Peregrine Systems and its leading IT asset and service management software portfolio. These were integrated into the HP OpenView business unit to create a 'comprehensive distributed enterprise management software solution'.

In November 2006 HP completed its purchase of Mercury Interactive Corp., and from February 2007 is integrating Mercury application and software lifecycle management solutions into the HP Software suite.

In early 2007, alongside the integration of Mercury, the entire HP OpenView portfolio is being rebranded under the strengthened HP Software name. The OpenView and Mercury brands are being phased out. HP OpenCall will continue, however, as a sub-brand of HP Software.

IUM allows you to implement usage-based billing systems, manage capacity, and analyze subscribers' behavior to develop strategic marketing programs and profitable value-added services.

[edit] User Groups

OpenView Forum International is the primary user group representing the community that uses OpenView. In addition to providing most of the services one would expect from a user group, OpenView Forum International is responsible for organizing the yearly HP Software Forum (formerly "OpenView Forum") — a conference designed for users of HP OpenView products.

While it is not an actual "user group", the ITRC is a group of users that can provide information and answer questions about OpenView products. The ITRC is an online forum with a sometimes surprising depth of expertise. See the external link below in the external links section.
