OpenArena is a free/open source 3D computer game that belongs to the "first-person shooter" genre. OpenArena had its first public test release on August 19 2005, the day after the Quake III engine GPL source code release and also the last day of Quake Expo 2005.
OpenArena is developed mainly using free/open source software. For instance, its game engine is id Software's GPL Quake III engine. OpenArena is entirely free as in speech. The game engine, game code and data are all pure Open Content.
It is still in very early development. In addition, a "missionpack" add-on is planned, to take advantage of the GPL'd Quake III: Team Arena source code.

[edit] Overview
OpenArena's gameplay is very similar to Quake III Arena - score frags to win the game using a very balanced set of weapons each designed for different situations. Gameplay modes exist such as the popular deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Tournament, and Capture The Flag (All modes also in the original game.) Since Version 0.6.0 you can play with bots.
OpenArena have been tested to be compatiable with some Quake 3 mods. List of tested mods can be found here [1]
