Onward and Upward was the first episode to kick off the new APC series. We see Ren and Stimpy living in a bum's mouth and the smelly, drafty conditions have been depriving Ren of a good night's sleep for some time now. Stimpy is affected as well because it has made Ren too tired to attend to his "needs". After another failed attempt at proper rest and being violated by the bum's uvula, he decides it's time to find a new home. They settle in a spittoon in a dingy bar full of disgusting, derelict patrons. However, the duo see it as high class, refined living.
Ren takes it upon himself to coach Stimpy on how to be an upper-crust gentleman over dinner. The meal consists of brutally whipped potatoes covered in vomit gravy, courtesy of a random bar patron, and others contribute to spicing up the meal with phlegm for some pea soup that was too thin, and a booger jell-o. Throughout the scene Ren keeps commenting on how refined they are.
Ren is finally ready to "take care of" Stimpy. A baseball theme acts as a less than subtle metaphor for what is taking place. Everything seems too perfect for the chihuahua and Cornish Rex until they are found out by one of the barflies. Chaos ensues and the two are chased back to their old home, which doesn't seem quite so bad anymore.

- This episode was originally written for the original series' second season. It was conceived as an answer to the fans who wrote to Spümcø, wanting to see an episode made purely out of gross-out gags, but not originally as "adult" as this version became.
- The baseball player Ren morphs into is a caricature of Robert Mitchum
- One of the bar patrons is voiced by radio host, and childhood friend of John K, Tom Hay, who also voiced a frog in Ren Seeks Help.
