Only a Poor Old Man

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Only A Poor Old Man is Uncle Scrooge #1 making it Scrooge McDuck's first comic, though Christmas on Bear Mountain is his first appearance. In "Only A Poor Old Man," Donald Duck is invited to Scrooge's Money Bin to get Scrooge's "wise advice." Soon The Beagle Boys have decided their first plan to get Scrooge McDuck's money is to buy property next to his, build a building, make a hole in his money bin and drain out his money. Luckily Huey, Dewey, and Louie, and also Donald help move Scrooge's money to a lake. When the Beagle Boys find out, they try three failed plans to break his dam and drain his money. When they finally break his dam with their "Plan 5" (super termites), Scrooge tricks them into knocking themselves unconscious, hauls the money onto his own land and pays his nephews and grand-nephews. This story introduces Scrooge's signature dive into money (and estabilish this as the first time the Beagle Boys see him doing that) and the payroll of 30 cents an hour. "Only a Poor Old Man" was published in 1952 and is the most reprinted Uncle Scrooge comic. It was even chosen as Free Comic Book of 2005.
