Oni-con

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Oni-Con is an anime convention created in 2004 in Houston, Texas. This is the city's first major anime convention, and despite being a relatively new anime convention, their list of past guests is very mentionable including the likes of Scott McNeil, Johnny Yong Bosch, Greg Ayres, Taliesin Jaffe, and most notably Yoshitaka Amano. Oni-Con has been held in three different places since it's creation. Oni-Con 2004 was held at the Sheraton North Houston. Oni-Con 2005 was held at the Grand Plaza Hotel, and Oni-Con 2006 was held at the George R. Brown Convention Center. The 2007 convention looks to be taking place at the George R. Brown as well.

[edit] Issues with the Grand Plaza Hotel

In 2005, the convention was held at the Grand Plaza Hotel. Due to a change in ownership right before the convention, the new owner imposed fees upon the convention and attendees. One example was that all participants were charged per vehicle and per day to park at the hotel. Some parents complained about the hotel charging a fee to even drive onto the premise to pick up their attending children.

The hotel owner sued the Oni-Con for breaking contract, and the convention filed a counter-suit. The case finally went to mediation in February of 2007. Oni-Con and the Grand Plaza Hotel settled out of court.[citation needed]
