[edit] Song

The original title for the song was "Plaster". The band say they created "One Step Closer" while struggling on "Runaway", the sixth track from Hybrid Theory.

The single was released in 2001, achieving notable success in Australia, but moderate success in the UK and US.

There is a remix of "One Step Closer" on LP's remix album Reanimation (2002), titled "1 Stp Klosr" and performed along with The Humble Brothers and Korn's lead singer Jonathan Davis.

Furthermore, Collision Course (2004) features a mash-up of this song with "Points Of Authority" and Jay-Z's "99 Problems".

Contrarily "One Step Closer" features Mike Shinoda's rapping/screaming for a very short time.

Linkin Park has closed every concert to date with it, excluding Live 8, on July 2, 2005 and the Summer Sonic Tour in Japan (2006), where they ended with Breaking the Habit.

From 2003 onwards, when "One Step Closer" is played live, it is extended. By this, the extended verse or bridge from "1Stp Klosr" ("One Step Closer" remix from Reanimation) is used while the band plays the original track.

The lyrics added from the Reanimation album are:

"These are the places,
Where I can't feel,
Torn from my body, my flesh it peels,
During this ride we can cut off what we like,

Waiting alone I cannot resist,
Feeling this hate I have never missed,
Please someone give me a reason,
To tear off my face,

Blood is a pouring,
and pouring,
and pouring,
and pouring,
and pouring,
and pouring,
and pouring,
shut up when I'm talking to you,
shut up (blood is pouring),
shut up (blood is pouring),
shut up (blood is pouring),
shut up when I'm talking to you,
shut up (blood is pouring),
shut up (blood is pouring),
shut up (blood is pouring),
shut up...

I'm about to break everything you say to me takes me one less closer to the edge and I'm about to break I need a little room to breath cause I'm one step closer to the edge I'm about to break everything you say to me takes me one less closer to the edge and I'm about to break I need a little room to breath cause I'm one step closer to the edge I'm about to....break ( more )

[edit] Video

Joe Hahn of Linkin Park came up with the concept for the video. The original version of the video was supposedly meant to be live footage of the band with fans (similar to the ones of the videos for Papa Roach's Last Resort and Korn's debut single Blind).

The video was shot in Los Angeles 63ft under ground in an abandoned LA subway tunnel, that is adjacent to an abandoned V.A. hospital.

In this video, the bass is played by Scott Koziol, who temporarily joined the band before Dave Farrell's comeback.

The director for the video, Gregory Dark, interestingly used to be a porn director.

On the boxes where Mr. Hahn's turntables are set up, you can see the Hybrid Theory EP logo.
