One For the Money is the first novel by Janet Evanovich featuring the bounty hunter Stephanie Plum. It was published in 1994 in the United States and in 1995 in Great Britain.
This novel was Evanovich's latest attempt at creating something more than marginally successful after writing romance novels which were published, but in limited amounts per month. After One For the Money was published, word spread around and soon the novel became hugely popular, as did its successors Two For The Dough and Three To Get Deadly. Her first novel, One for the Money won the Dilys Award. Only two other authors have won the Dilys Award for their first mystery, Julia Spencer-Fleming and Louise Penney.
This novel would introduce characters that would frequent the upcoming novels (currently there are twelve published novels in the Stephanie Plum series).
[edit] Plot summary
During the story, Stephanie Plum is a woman who has been out of a job for six months due to layoffs at the department store where she was the lingerie buyer. A desperate woman with desperate needs, she blackmails her cousin Vinnie into giving her a job as a bounty hunter at his bonding agency. There she meets Connie, Vinnie's assistant, who gives her her first assignment - to bring in sexy cop Joseph Morelli, who is wanted for murder. Stephanie has a sordid past with Morelli - including two sexual encounters and a hit-and-run incident, but she is determined that nothing will stop her from receiving her $10,000 for bringing him in.
