[edit] Plot summary

John Cusack plays Hoops McCann, recent high school grad who failed to get a basketball scholarship, disappointing his parents. Hoops hopes to be admitted to the Rhode Island School of Design, and must write and illustrate a love story for his application. He joins his friend George (Joel Murray) and George's sister Squid to spend the summer on the island of Nantucket. En route, they pick up a young rock singer named Cassandra (Demi Moore); she is being chased by a motorcycle gang at the time. Once on the island, Hoops and George, along with George's island friends the Stork twins and Ack-Ack (son of a marine), must help Cassandra save her grandfather's house from the greedy Beckersted Family. Along the way, Hoops must find a way to write his cartoon love story.

[edit] Trivia

  • During one of the montage scenes which illustrates Hoops' journey from Generic, New York to Woods Hole, Massachusetts, an overhead shot shows his car traveling along a freeway. However, not only was the freeway chosen for the shot the Mid-Cape Highway section of U.S. Highway 6 on Cape Cod, a road he would not have traveled on to get to Woods Hole from New York, but the car was traveling westbound on the highway crossing Bass River, which serves as the Dennis/Yarmouth town line, which is approximately 25 miles east-north-east of Woods Hole.
  • Sometimes described as "Better Off Dead goes to the beach", due to the same director and several returning cast members (Cusack, Armstrong, Negron) from the classic 80's comedy. Both Hoops and Lane Meyer are both cartoonists, as well.
