OneTouch Ultra
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
OneTouch Ultra is a blood glucose monitoring device for diabetics. The detection apparatus has advanced features that range from fast results, a more compact size when compared to other monitoring devices and it offers virtually pain free blood monitoring. The small blood volume needed also allows alternate site (forearm or palm) testing to be used in lieu of the fingertip.
It is supplied in a kit containing a carry case, the OneTouch UltraSoft Adjustable Sampling Device, sample quantities of lancets, test strips and a replacement cap for use with the sampling device when using alternate site testing. Testing may take place with the meter in the carry case for user discretion.
The OneTouch Ultra 2 is similar in design and operation, but features Before and After Meal Flags, Comments, and a list style memory recall. This meter also provides 7 day, 14 day, and 30 day averages, with the option of only averaging Before meal or After Meal records.
Other similar versions of the Meter are the OneTouch UltraSmart, and the OneTouch UltraMini. The One Touch UltraMini is known as the UltraEasy in Europe where the name Mini is protected by BMW copyright. The overall profile of this device is based on the One Touch Horizon which is not sold in the USA. One of the features of this group of meters is that they all use the OneTouch Ultra test strip. (The Horizon uses a different design of strip).
The device basically requires no cleaning and allows the storage of up to 150 previous measurements. These can be used in combination with the downloadable OneTouch Diabetes Management Software and a PC to compute averages and trends. The software is available for free download from LifeScan's Web site but the interface cable must be purchased.
[edit] Notable ad campaigns
- B.B. King has had diabetes for 10+ years. He was in an ad campaign for OneTouch Ultra, describing how blue he feels from diabetes. There was a more recent campaign with him and a younger diabetic who also played blues music. One motivation for this was to promote the use of alternate site testing.
- Patti Labelle has had diabetes for 12+ years. She is in an ad campaign for OneTouch Ultra2, describing how she collapsed on stage the first time she had diabetes. Labelle re-recorded her 80's hit New Attitude (Patti Labelle song) for one of the commercials.
- OneTouch is also the main shirt sponsor of Inverness Caledonian Thistle, highlighting LifeScan's presence as a major employer in the city.
