[edit] Plot

Tony Carpenter is self-made millionaire who turned his East End minicab firm into a successful chauffeur-driven car service. He lives in a huge mansion in Esher, surrounded by Rolls Royces and Bentleys, with domestic staff who respect him, and who he adores — witty and insolent butler/driver Sam, acerbic secretary Maggie and sherry-soaked cook Mrs. Wembley - whose catch-phrase was "Just the one", even though it was usually her third or fourth.

Despite all this, Tony's life is still full of conflict. His working-class background and sensibilities makes him uncomfortable with the idea of having servants. And nothing he does seems to please his snooty wife Ruth, who hates his downmarket behaviour, constantly suspects him of infidelity with either Maggie or lifelong friend Dawn, and cannot abide the "chummy" relationship he has with his servants. Then there is his mother, still living in the East End, who never seems impressed with his achievements, and can't understand why he lives "all the way over there" in his big house.
