On A Night like This Tour
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The On a Night Like This Tour played to sell-out crowds in Australia and the United Kingdom, where she sold over 200,000 tickets and set an Australian record for a female artist. The six planned Melbourne shows were increased to twenty-two due to public demand. Minogue was inspired by the style of Broadway shows such as 42nd Street and films such as Anchors Aweigh, South Pacific and the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers musicals of the 1930s. Describing Bette Midler as a "heroine", she also incorporated some of the "camp and burlesque" elements of Midler's live performances. The show directed and choreographed by Luca Tommassini featured elaborate back-drops such as the deck of an ocean liner, an Art Deco New York City skyline, and the interior of a space ship. Minogue was praised for her new material and her reinterpretations of some of her greatest successes, turning "I Should Be So Lucky" into a torch song and "Better the Devil You Know" into a 1940s big band number.
The last show of the tour, which took place in Sydney Australia, was filmed for DVD release. The DVD featured exclusive backstage footage and the promo video for Spinning Around.
[edit] About the Show
The Concert has no screens or projections but instead back-drops and lighting are used. The stage design itself is also minimalist. A small elevator is located front and center of the stage but is only used twice.
In the opening segment of the concert Kylie is lowered to the stage on an anchor for the song Loveboat. During this first segment the back-drop depicts a ship and the dancers also have matching outfits, the males in sailor suits and the females in bikinis. Kylie first appears wering a floral robe which she later takes off to reveal a red and white top with a denim skirt. Surprising to some Kylie uses a head-set microphone for the first two songs, Loveboat and Koocachoo. The first segment also includes a stripped back version of Put Yourself in My Place.
The second segment of the show starts with On A Night Like This which leads to a virtual hits medley. This segment also includes Can't Get You Out of My Head and closes with Your Disco Needs You. Kylie first appears in a red suit and then removes the top and wears a black, flame tank top.
The third segment begins with a shortened ballad version of I Should Be So Lcuky carried over from the Intimate and Live tour, which Minogue performes in a white suit while sitting a top a piano. Then comes a big band inspired version of Better the Devil You Know. The final song in the segment is So Now Goodbye.
The forth segment starts out with a sultry cover of the Olivia Newton-John hit Physical that Minogue and her female dancers perform on stripper poles. For this number Kylie wears a dress that has sequins to give a reflective effect. After Pyshical the song Butterfly starts with an extended intro to give Kylie time to change outfits, the male dancers perform during the intro. Then Kylie reappears, wearing a top that appears to made of diamonds in strands covering her bra and golden, track-suit like, pants. The moves of Butterfly are very sensual and mildly erotic. The segment closes with the hit Shocked.
The forth segment, which is also the encores, begins with Light Years. The back drop looks like a space ship, flashing as if ready to land. As the song beings the door the ship opens up and Kylie makes her grand entrance, wearing a simple white and blue dress. The second oncore is What do I have to Do, in which Kylie introduces her dancers and band. The final oncore is the hit Spinning Around for which Kylie wears her infamous hot pants. The encore is a fantastic, energetic end to a fabulous show.
