Omnibus was a commercially-sponsored educational TV series broadcast in the United States, primarily on Sunday afternoons, from November 9, 1952 to 1961. It aired originally on CBS, then on Sunday evenings on ABC before finally moving to NBC in 1957, where it was irregularly scheduled until its demise. ABC aired a brief revival of the series in 1981.
It was funded by the Ford Foundation. It was hosted by Alistair Cooke (his first appearance in the US) and it featured diverse programming about science, the arts and the humanities. It is mainly remembered today for showcasing the first television appearances of Leonard Bernstein, who gave his first music lectures on this program, on subjects such as Beethoven's Fifth, opera, jazz, and musical theatre. Entertainers as diverse as Jack Benny and Orson Welles also appeared on the series.
