Omarion Nebula

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Omarion Nebula is an interstellar dust cloud located in the Gamma Quadrant in the science fiction television series Star Trek: Deep Space 9.

The nebula is located deep within Dominion space and contains a single sunless "rogue" M class planet[1]. Seeking an escape from persecution by solids, the Founders of the Dominion had established a new home on this planet some 10,000 years ago, where they would remain until they covertly relocated in advance of an impending attack by a joint Cardassian and Romulan fleet in 2371[2].

While the location of the Founders' homeworld within the Nebula was a closely guarded secret, the 100 infant Changelings sent by the Founders to explore the galaxy, including Odo, future Chief of Security for Deep Space 9, were imprinted with a subconscious desire to return home. It was this desire that caused Odo to travel to the nebula with Major Kira Nerys following their escape from a Jem'Hadar attack on the USS Defiant in 2371[1].

Later in 2371 a joint fleet of ships under the control of the Cardassian Obsidian Order and the Romulan Tal Shiar entered the Omarion Nebula on a mission to eliminate the Founders in a single assault by destroying the crust of their planet.

The attack was in actual fact a trap laid by the Founders, who had secretly relocated the Great Link, the collective embodiment of their natural state, from the nebula to a new homeworld. Changeling infiltrators within the Cardassian and Romulan governments had known of the attack since the planning stages, and in fact, Romulan Colonel Lovok was later revealed to have been a Changeling himself.

A large fleet of approximately 150 Jem'Hadar ships lay in wait, and ambushed the Romulan and Cardassian ships following their initial barrage of the planet's surface. In the ensuing battle all of the Romulan and Cardassian ships were apparently destroyed[2], although some survivors, such as Enabrain Tain were later discovered to have been captured and detained by the Dominion in Internment Camp 371[3].
