Olga (urban-type settlement)

Olga (Russian: О́льга) is a port urban-type settlement in Primorsky Krai, Russia, situated on the Olga Bay of the Sea of Japan, some 240 km north-east of Nakhodka. It is the administrative center of Olginsky District. Population: 4,453 (2002 Census); 4,802 (1989 Census).

[edit] Medieval history
From the middle of the ninth century, the kingdom of Balhae occupied Primorsky Krai, consisting of the Nanai, the Udege, the Evenks, the Mohe and other descendants of the Tungus-speaking people. Prior to this occupation, Olga and its neighbourhood were settled by Yulou Mohe (Hangul : 우루말갈 Hanja/Hanzi : 虞婁靺鞨 pinyin : Yúlóu Mòhé) tribes who were incorporated to Balhae Kingdom under King Seon's reign (818-830). During the Balhae kingdom period, a town called Anju (Hangul :안주, Hanja : 安州) was founded near the present-day Olga, on the shores of Olga Bay, which was the administrative centre of Anbyeon Prefecture (Hangul : 안변부, Hanja :安邊府).

The settlement of Olga was first mentioned in 1860. It was named for Saint Olga.
