Oldham PRU supports pupils, aged between 10 and 16, who are unable to access mainstream school, including those with behaviour problems, or have been permanently excluded, or those who cannot attend for medical reasons.
The unit's first Ofsted inspection took place in March and inspectors judged the PRU as "a good unit with some outstanding features."
The PRU was praised for its consistently good teaching and curriculum. Achievement is good with all Year 11 pupils leaving with nationally recognised awards.
Inspectors also highlighted how the unit's "excellent links with other professionals, together with outstanding support and guidance, result in very good improvement in pupils' attitudes, behaviour and career prospects."
The unit was commended for its outstanding provision for pupils' moral and social development, particularly through staff knowing "pupils' personal circumstances exceptionally well," developing close links with parents and working effectively to support students during a time of major disruption in their lives.
The "outstanding leadership of the headteacher and excellent support of key members of staff" to improve the unit for its 165 pupils, despite recent significant changes to the unit, was also recognised by inspectors.
Nikki Shaw, head of the PRU, said: "I am delighted with the outcome of this report and feel very proud of the achievements of the pupils and staff across the different areas of the PRU, which cater for a wide range of pupil needs.
"We are committed to ensuring that every pupil is able to make the most of their skills and provide them with an environment where they have the opportunity to shine and realise their potential."
Ged McClinton, Oldham Council's Interim Assistant Director of Inclusion, for the newly established Directorate of Services for Children, Young People & Families, added: "I am delighted that the PRU's first Ofsted inspection recognises the strong leadership and teamwork that exists, the healthy relationships with the local community and the quality of teaching and learning provided for its pupils.
"The inspection confirms that the headteacher and staff are working hard to provide pupils with a good education and with skills that will be useful to them in their lives after school. The inspectors' findings have also helped to identify where we can improve the PRU further and realise our aim of becoming an outstanding provision.
"Oldham PRU has gone through a significant period of change in recent months and I am sure that it will continue to improve and offer its pupils the opportunity to realise their potential."
