Old Virginia Brick
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Old Virginia Brick is a manufacturer of bricks headquartered in Salem, Virginia, in the Roanoke Valley. The company was founded in 1890 and is best known for its wood moulded bricks manufactured at the Salem plant. This method of making bricks has changed little during the company's history. The "old-fashioned" appearance of these bricks makes them valued by those who seek a traditional appearance in their structures. The University of Virginia and Wake Forest University are prominent customers. In 1995, Old Virginia Brick purchased a plant in Madison Heights, Virginia, just north of Lynchburg, which manufactures bricks with the modern extrusion method.
In 2002, the owners of Old Virginia Brick purchased a 50 foot tall section of structural steel that had been a piece of the World Trade Center from a scrapyard. In 2003, the section, immediately recognizable as being from the World Trade Center, was erected in front of the Salem plant and dedicated as a memorial to the victims of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
