The old State Library Building is situated immediately opposite Queens Gardens in William Street, Brisbane.

The building was originally constructed for the Queensland Museum, which stayed in the building for 20 years (1879-1899).

The building then housed the State Library of Queensland for 88 years (1899-1988), as well as an Art gallery.

In the late 1950s, an extension, with a distinctive tiled mural, was built onto the building to give more space. The mural used was the winning design in a national competition held in 1958.
