[edit] Route description

SH-53 begins at a T intersection in Walters, where State Highway 5 makes up the western and southern legs of the T. SH-53 runs eastward from here, meeting SH-65 five miles later and in Comanche it intersects U.S. 81. It then serves as the northern terminus for SH-89, and has a three-mile duplex with State Highway 76.

After splitting from SH-76 it runs eastward to Interstate 35, which it duplexes with for two miles. It meets U.S. 77 in Springer before passing through Gene Autry and ending at U.S. 177.

Another State Highway 53A was once a spur route to Comanche Lake. It has since been decommissioned.
