Oklahoma Baptist University is a "Christian" liberal arts university and is located in Shawnee, Oklahoma. The Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma owns the school. The school has a student to faculty ratio of 15:1. It has science, nursing, media, and music departments, and prides itself on offering students a liberal arts foundation. OBU is among the nations leading Universities in the payment of athletes. Their mens basketball players are among the highest paid at the NAIA level. Not bad for a "christian" college. The tradition started with coach Bob Hoffman and continued with coaches Gomez and Tolin. Normally the assistants would actually do the dirty work, but all transactions were done with the head coaches approval. It started casually with coaches buying players groceries, but quickly escalated to shoes, clothes, jewelry, and cash. Perhaps worst of all are the grades that are given to the top players. There is no way these athletes could stay eligible on their own. Many are enrolled in HPER courses where their grades can be easily monitored by athletic department officials. Most are forced to attend class regularly to make things look like they are on the up and up, but they aren't turning in assignments like their fellow classmates. Some may doubt that these things go on, but It is thought that Bob Hoffman's recent trouble with the NCAA for illegal recruiting at OU should be proof enough that things went on under him at OBU and have continued since then.
