Oki Islands

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Oki (隠岐) is the name of a group of islands (隠岐諸島 Oki shotō) in the Sea of Japan, 40 to 80 km north from the coast of Honshū. They are part of Shimane Prefecture, Japan. Prior to the establishment of the prefectures, they comprised Oki Province. The present-day Oki District encompasses these islands.

The islands include Okinoshima, Nakanoshima, Nishinoshima, Dōgo and Chiburijima.

Both Emperor Go-Toba and Emperor Go-Daigo were exiled to Oki.

Oki Airport (OKI), a Class III facility with a 1500 m runway, is in Okinoshima, the most populous town on these islands. It provides air service to Osaka International Airport ("Itami", ITM) and Izumo Airport (IZO).

On October 1, 2004, the town of Saigō and the villages of Fuse, Goka and Tsuma were administratively merged into the town of Okinoshima.
