Ys III: Wanderers from Ys, is the third original release in Nihon Falcom's popular Ys video game franchise, and chronologically the fourth game in the series' overall storyline (following the first two games, as well as Ys IV: Mask of the Sun). Traditionally, Ys games are a top-down style of Action-RPG, but Ys III, as it is commonly referred to by fans, has gained notoriety for being an exception to this rule.
Adol Christin reprises his role as the hero for the third installment, returning to his homeland of Felghana with his good pal, Dogi. While there, he comes to the realization that things aren't quite right in Felghana, and he gets caught up in a new adventure for the players to enjoy.
On June 30th, 2005, Falcom released Ys: The Oath in Felghana, a complete remake of Ys III. See the section below for more information.

[edit] Gameplay
Breaking the trend of the previous Ys titles, Ys III features sides-crolling gameplay similar to that found in Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. While in town or travelling through one of the game's dungeons, Adol is seen from a side view, and is able to move left or right, in addition to being able to jump. Just as Zelda II is frequently considered to be the black sheep of its respective series, Ys III is doubtless the most polarizing entry in the longstanding franchise for the way it mercilessly abandons the established formula. [something here about how despite turning off veterans, it still has garnered loyal fans blah blah blah] As is the case with many RPGs, statistical character development plays a considerable part in Ys III. Adol can raise his stats, and thus become stronger, either by utilizing the game's experience sytem or by equipping swords, shields, and armor. He can also wear magical rings, many of which provide a temporary boost to a certain stat.
While in the game's town (and on a few occasions inside dungeons), Adol can interact with various NPCs. The function they serve ranges from passive gossiping, to buying and selling equipment and items. Some NPCs are fairly important characters and conversing with them is sometimes required to advance the plot. Text boxes aren't labelled with the speaking character's name, but conversations can be followed by remembering that text spoken by Adol is always displayed in yellow (as opposed to white).
[edit] Combat
Much of Adol's quest takes place inside a number of monster-infested dungeons, and constant fighting is important for gaining experience and becoming stronger. The hero's weapon of choice is the sword, and he can purchase or find many of them throughout the course of the game. Enemies are seen on-screen, and with a button press Adol swings his sword, striking any enemy in its range of motion. Adol can strike while running, and even while jumping. By pressing and holding the attack button during a jump, he can perform a downward stab.

[edit] Notes to Self
Work on the following (in addition to the obvious filling in the blank sections)
- General editing out redundant/obvious/boring information.
- Still deciding how to fit criticisms/fan reception into the mix (currently mingling with Gameplay)
- Revise the Combat section (just don't like it, especially something about the sword swinging - seems blah)
- Figure out the The Oath in Felghana section (how much should it be gone into, basically)
- Stop worrying and being overly meticulous
- Get a haircut
