Oil pulling
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Oil pulling or oil swishing, in alternative medicine, is a procedure in which the practitioner rinses their mouth with approximately one tablespoon of an ordinary cooking oil for 3−20 minutes, then spits it out.[1] This procedure is typically performed daily.[2]
Olive oil may be effective in reducing bacterial growth and adhesion when used as a dentifrice, (PMID 12799117) suggesting a possible method of action. Two additional studies found reduced formation of dental plaque when soya oil was used as a mouth rinse, one of which attributed this effect to the formation of a hydrophobic layer on tooth surfaces. (PMID 7817156, PMID 7634134) However, a study using a tea tree oil solution as a mouth rinse found no positive effect on the quantity or quality of supragingival plaque. (PMID 11218503)
