Oia sunset
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Oia is a village on the northern tip of the Greek island of Santorini. It is spectacularly set, its colourful houses and churches clinging almost miraculously to the edge of the caldera. While the village is a major attraction in itself, in the evening hordes of people arrive simply to watch its sunset. Every available seat, wall, step or patch of ground is occupied and picnicing while watching the sunset is almost de rigeur.
What makes the Oia sunset so special? Possible factors are the lack of pollution in the atmosphere and the relative absence of light pollution. More likely though it is more "romantic" terms than that which make it so special - the setting, the climate, the fact that you're most likely on holiday... Besides, sunsets over water are always amongst the best. Here, with the islets of the caldera and the more distant Cycladic islands thrown into relief, and with the golden-coloured ocean punctuated by the ripples of passing pleasure craft, Oia's sunsets are justifiably famous.
