OH-081st AFJROTC

The OH-081st Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps is a small JROTC unit established in Springboro High School, Springboro, Ohio [1]. It was founded in 1981 and is a Squadron level unit, with roughly 60-80 cadets enrolled each year. Its current Senior Aerospace Science Instructor (SASI) is Lieutenant Colonel Richard Runchey (Ret.), who took over the post from Colonel Richard Shapiro in 2004. Its Aerospace Science Instructor (ASI) is currently Chief Master Sergeant Ken Pawlowski, who transferred to the position from the OH-771st AFJROTC in 2002. The unit motto is "I will not lie, cheat or steal, nor will I tolerate those amongst us who do."[2]

The OH-081st drill team is most well known for its success in the 2003-2004 drill season during which the team won 26 trophies in 8 drill competitions. Most notably, the team won 6 first place trophies and 1 third place trophy at the OH-771 drill competition in April 2004.

[edit] Unarmed IDR

The 0H-081st has been operating an Unarmed Inspected Drill Routine (IDR) team since 2002. The team has competed in numerous drill competitions as well as parades. The Unarmed IDR Team is by far the largest activity within the unit, with 20-30 cadets participating each year on average. This team is further broken down into "First Year" Freshmen Cadets and "Advanced" upperclassmen. This team has garnered several trophies.

The Armed Inspected Drill Routine (IDR) team is newer and has only been operating since early 2004. It has participated in several Drill Competitions as well as Military Ball and Dining Out functions for the unit.

[edit] Color Guard

The Color Guard of the unit is the oldest activity in the unit, although it did not enter competitions until 2002. It has participated in numerous Drill Competitions and won several awards of its own. In addition, OH-081 was honored with opening several baseball games for the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ballpark in 2004 and 2005. The first was on September 14, 2004 when Cadet Senior Master Sergeant Tristan Navera led a Color Guard in presenting the National and State colors during the playing of the National Anthem.

[edit] Kitty Hawk Air Society

The OH-081st is home of the John Glenn chapter of the Kitty Hawk Air Society. The society sells candy bars to raise money for the town's annual "Relay For Life" hosted by the American Cancer Society. The KHAS has also adopted an area of the road in front of the school, and maintains the cleanliness of the road.

[edit] Model Aircraft Club

The Model Aircraft club meets weekly and flies model aircraft. It is often joined by several people who are not members of the unit.

[edit] Summer Leadership School

The Ohio 081st partakes in the annual Ohio Valley Summer Leadership School at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. The cadets there normally participate in ten days of rigorous activities teaching teamwork, leadership, and military values. The school is held in June and normally includes many cadets from other units as well; such as the OH-771st AFJROTC.[3]
