Ofla

Ofla (also known by the Amharic form Wofla) is one of the 36 woredas in the Tigray Region of Ethiopia. Part of the Debubawi Zone, Ofla is bordered on the south by Alamata, on the west by the Amhara Region, on the north by Endamehoni, and on the east by Raya Azebo.

Towns in Ofla include Korem and Zikuya. Within the boundaries of this woreda is Lake Ashenge, where Christopher da Gama was defeated and killed by Imam Ahmad Gragn in 1543.

Based on figures published by the Central Statistical Agency in 2005, this woreda has an estimated total population of 171,370, of whom 87,789 were males and 83,581 were females; 29,787 or 17.38% of its population are urban dwellers, which is less than the Zone average of 29.1%. With an estimated area of 1,297.50 square kilometers, Ofla has an estimated population density of 132.1 people per square kilometer, which is less than the Zone average of 133.18.[1]
