- 1942 – The French engineer Léon Bronchart refuses to drive a train of prisoners. He's the only engineer known in France to hold such a protest during World War II.
- 1956 – The last surface streetcars operate in Brooklyn, New York.
- 1957 – Canadian National Railway receives authorization to operate the former New York Central Railroad (NYC) lines in Ottawa, Ontario, to reach industries that were originally served by NYC.
- 1965 – Canadian National Railway inaugurates Rapido passenger train service between Montreal and Toronto.
- 1976 – Canadian Pacific Railway and Canadian National Railway issue the first joint VIA Rail timetable.
- 1978 – The last passenger train departs from St. Louis Union Terminal.
- 1987 – Montana Rail Link begins operations on 907 miles of former Burlington Northern Railroad (originally Northern Pacific Railroad) tracks.

- 2001 – A broken rail on the SNCF in France derails a TGV train travelling at 130 km/h (80.8 mph), but only six minor injuries result.
- 2002 – BC Rail operates the last run of the Cariboo Prospector passenger train between Prince George and North Vancouver, British Columbia.
