- 1904 – The first underground line of the New York City Subway opens; the system is now the largest in the United States, and one of the largest in the world.
- 1907 – Union Station in Washington, DC, opens.
- 1996 – Soo Line 1003, a 2-8-2 steam locomotive built by ALCO in 1913, operates under its own power for the first time after its restoration.

- 2003 – The fleet of Siemens trains is returned to M>Train (Melbourne, Australia) service, some minus livery.
- 2004 – The North American rail labor union Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employes votes to merge with the Teamsters.
