Ocean Springs High School is a public high school in Ocean Springs, Mississippi (USA). The school serves students in grades 9-12 and is part of the Ocean Springs School District. Its auditorium's roof collapsed in Hurricane Katrina, on August 29, 2005.

[edit] Campus

The school's campus is split into two major sections, which are both split into sub-sections.

The first section is the north campus. The north campus is split into the main building and the 9th Grade Academy.

The main building houses the offices (Administrative, Main, Counseling, and Attendance) along with a set of English and Social Studies classrooms, the Band and Choir Halls, and the Cafeteria.

Although the 9th Grade Academy houses mainly freshmen level classes, including 9th grade Algebra I, Biology, English I, and remedial classes, it also is home to a few upper level courses.

The south campus is split into the 15 Classroom Building (Math/Science Hall), the Round Building classrooms, the Media Center building, the Gym, and the Auditorium. The Auditorium was the only part of the school effected by Hurricane Katrina in 2006 and has been completely renovated since. It was completed January 2007.

In the 15 classroom building, the classes are primarily Sciences (Such as Chemistry, AP Chemistry, AP Biology, Anatomy and Physiology, Physics, and AP Physics), and Mathematics (upper-level Algebra I, Algebra II, Advanced Algebra, Accelerated and Regular Geometry, Probability and Statistics, Pre-Calculus, AP Calculus AB and BC). The round building mainly has foreign languages (French and Spanish), health classes, and JROTC classes.

[edit] Extracurricular Activites

The Ocean Springs High School sports team mascot is the Greyhound. OSHS has teams in the following sports: Football, Track and Field, Swimming Cross Country, Fast and Slow pitch Softball, Soccer, Volleyball, Basketball, Golf, Tennis, and Baseball.

The high school also has the Blue Grey Pride band. The band plays at half-time at every football game, at parades, various concerts, marching festivals, and many other civic functions. They are known well for their style, energy, dedication, and continuous all-superiors at festivals and competitions. The Blue-Grey Pride has been a performer for the Walt Disney Company at Walt Disney World for the past 23 years. The Band is under the direction of Joe Cacibauda.

The Blue-Grey Pride marching band also includes the Ocean Springs High School varsity dance team. They perform during halftime shows, band festivals, and compete at the MHSAA State Dance Competition in December. At two recent marching festivals, the dancers got superior ratings and "Best Dancers All-Around" at the Deep South Marching Festival, along with a near-perfect score of 99. This group has a reputation of being one of the best in the south, along with their style, classiness, and their signature black gloves.

[edit] Other information

  • The North Campus used to be the junior high school, which became a middle school and was moved to its current area, and the high school consisted only of the current South Complex. The cafeteria was shared between the two schools, and the South Campus had its own office by the auditorium.
  • The South Campus was built in the late 1960s and the early 1970s. The North Campus was built in the late 1970s. Ever since then, the school has undergone many remodeling changes in order to accommodate different types of classes, such as the three Technology Discovery classrooms on the North Campus that must accommodate 13 rather large modules.
