Ocean City High School

Ocean City High School is a four-year comprehensive public high school located in Ocean City, in Cape May County, New Jersey, United States, as part of the Ocean City School District. Students from the Corbin City, Sea Isle City and Upper Township school districts attend Ocean City High School as part of sending/receiving relationships.

Ocean City High School was the 93rd-ranked public high school in New Jersey out of 316 schools statewide, in New Jersey Monthly magazine's September 2006 cover story on the state's Top Public High Schools^[1].

The first Ocean City High School graduation took place in 1904 with six students meeting the requirements for a diploma. These six students attended the first school constructed on the island that was located at Central Avenue between 8th and 9th streets. As the population grew, a new brick building was built on the same site and served as the high school until 1924.

A graduate of OCHS, Vivian B. Smith, was the architect who designed the structure that was later built between 5th and 6th streets and Atlantic & Ocean Avenues. Students from Somers Point and Linwood departed from OCHS in 1961 as populations rose. In 1963 the building was expanded and the the north and south wings were constructed.

In 1971 a bond referendum to build a new high school at the Intermediate School site was defeated. But in 1982 construction began on another addition that replaced and renovated the front portion of the old building. By the 1990s the school had become a hodge-podge of styles and eras. The high ceilings of the classrooms had been dropped and many of the large windows had been bricked in, including the fabulous stained glass windows of the auditorium. The elegant gothic-style building built in 1924 was no longer recognizable as the hulking brick edifice it had become. The school had served the community well for eighty years, but the patching and repairing wasn't enough anymore.

Then on December 11, 2001 60% of the registered voters went to the polls and overwhelmingly approved construction of the present-day facility that now occupies Atlantic Avenue between 5th and 6th streets (across from where the previous building was located). Construction began in 2002 and the new building was finished for the 2004-05 school year. The old building was gradually torn down and replaced by much needed parking and tennis courts that had previously occupied the site of the new school. All that remains of the old school is the gothic-style entrance arch.

The school has many athletic teams and extracurricular activities. Carey Stadium is used for Ocean City High School's football and lacrosse teams. Soccer is played at the Tennessee Avenue fields. The school also has baseball, wrestling, tennis, field hockey, swimming,crew, cross- country, track and many other teams. The teams' name is the Red Raiders. The field hockey team won the 2005 state championships.^[2]

The Boys soccer team won the NJSIAA South, Group III 2005 Soccer Championship, defeating Lacey Township High School 5-0 on November 11, 2005^[3]. The team then moved on to the 2005 Boys Soccer - Public Semis/Finals, defeating Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School 2-0 in the group championships^[4]. The team was ranked number one in the state by The Star-Ledger^[5].

The Boys Tennis team has improved in 2007 with a strong group of incoming freshmen contributing greatly to the team.
