the Oblates of the Virgin Mary Venerable Bruno Lanteri, was born in 1759 in northern Italy. His homelife had a strong atmosphere of faith, but was also touched by deep sorrow. Losing his mother when he was only four, Bruno developed a strong love for Mary. His attraction to what he would later call “silence and seclusion” prompted Bruno to enter the Carthusians at the age of seventeen. the Oblates of Mary Most Holy began in 1816 as a diocesan congregation.
The Oblates of the Virgin Mary received papal approval in 1827, and Fr. Lanteri died three years later in 1830.
The Oblates of the Virgin Mary came to the United States in 1976. Since then, they have expanded rapidly with foundations in Massachusetts, Colorado, Illinois, California and a new seminary and retreat center in the Philippines.
