[edit] About me
I am a third-year high school student at Haddonfield Memorial High School. Though I've used Wikipedia as a source of information for a few years, I only became a user in May 2006 and have contributed rather intermittently since then.
[edit] Political views and beliefs
I consider myself a social democrat with slight classical liberal tendencies. I support the renewal of the welfare state based on the realities of a globalized economy: namely, a greater emphasis on long-term and preventative rather than curative welfare policy. Free trade, in my mind, is ideally a positive force; however, in reality it cannot be expected to confer the benefits of globalization equally on the world's citizens.
Socially speaking, I support strong civil liberties, a progressive social policy, multiculturalism and the active protection of human rights.
I lend my political support to the Progressive faction of the Democratic Party.
[edit] Interests
My major academic interests are Romance languages - especially French, which I speak passably, and Portuguese, which I would like to learn - all things Russian, modern European history, and contemporary politics - particularly the politics of France, Russia, and the Britain.
Political topics which have been of particular interest to me over the past year have included the origins, modern transformation, and types of welfare states (The Three Worlds of Welfare Capitalism and Why We Need a New Welfare State, Gøsta Esping-Andersen), the progressive neo-liberalization of European socialist parties (In the Name of Social Democracy, Gerassimos Moschanos), France under the Third Republic, and Imperial Russian politics between 1905 and the October Revolution.
Non-academically, I spend a good deal of my time involved in geofiction. I enjoy watching Lost and also admit to the occasional viewing of Prime Minister's Questions.
