Oberhasli (goat)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Oberhasli is a dairy goat from the eponymous district of the Canton of Berne (Switzerland). Oberhasli are reddish brown in color with a black dorsal stripe, legs, belly, and face. Occasionally a black Oberhasli appears as a result of recessive genes. The American Dairy Goat Association considers black does acceptable and will allow them to be registered, but black bucks cannot be registered. The breed is slightly smaller in size than the other standard sized (i.e. full sized dairy goats) breeds. Temperament tends to be quiet and sweet natured but alert, with vocalizing along the lines of the Alpine breeds.

This breed is still relatively rare in the United States, because until recently, it was not accepted as a breed in America. Because of its close similarity to the Alpine goat, the Oberhasli was largely incorporated into the American Alpines. A small number of them were not, and the breed was kept alive in America almost singlehandly by Esther Oman, a breeder in California. The Oberhasli breed is growing in popularity at goat shows as breeders look to branch out. This has led to crossbreeding with the alpine breeds, altering the breed characteristics. This breed is a good choice for the person who wants a dairy goat, appreciates its vivid coloration, wants something slightly out of the ordinary, and who wants a quiet and gentle breed.
