Ober Ost

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ober Ost, short for the German term Oberbefehlshaber der gesamten deutschen Streitkräfte im Osten ("supreme command of all German forces in the East"), was a German World War I military administration governing a large part of the German-held areas of the Russian Empire. It covered roughly 108,808 km² of Courland, Lithuania and the Polish areas of Augustów and Suwałki. It was created by the Oberste Heeresleitung in 1915 and its first commander was Prince Leopold of Bavaria.
