Oakland, Massachusetts

Oakland is one of five primary historic neighborhoods of the city of Taunton, Massachusetts. Although these neighborhoods are not census-designated areas, they are municipally-designated populated regions of the city.

Oakland is the western portion of the city, bordering the Westville, Weir, and Whittenton neighborhoods. Oakland borders the municipalities of Norton, Rehoboth, and Dighton.

Most of Oakland are composed of much heavily wooded areas, swamps, small bodies of water, and suburban communities. There are few farms and businesses located within the neighborhood.

[edit] Transportation

Route 140 is the only major route within the Oakland neighborhood. GATRA is the only public transportation within the neighborhood, which they operate through Tremont Street/Route 140 and into the town of Norton.

[edit] Tremont Street

Oakland consist of a suburban lifestyle, with several small farms far down Tremont Street, after separating from Route 140. Tremont Street is the largest, busiest, and most extensive road in Oakland. Tremont Street is Route 140 for along most of its way through Oakland before separating at the Tremont Street/Alfred Lord Boulevard split. Route 140 run through the center of the neighborhood and into the town of Norton, making that area the most heavily populated within the neighborhood. Tremont Street into the town of Rehoboth.

At the start of Tremont Street from the Washington Street/Tremont Street intersection, consists of a few small plazas, which is occupied by a supermarket, and several small businesses. These plazas are the most concentrated areas of business within the neighborhood. Also, there are several schools, a municipal golf course, a psychiatric hospital, various small & independent businesses, located either on Tremont Street or on one of its sidestreets.

There are two middle schools and two elementary schools located in Oakland. Although most of them are located on sidestreets of Tremont Street. Recently, the neighborhood received a newly-constructed middle school and elementary school on Norton Avenue.

[edit] Infrastructure

There are no police stations and/or substations located in the neighborhood, but there is a fire house and engine for the Oakland area located on North Walker Street.
