Oakham was first settled in 1749 and was officially incorporated in 1775.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 55.8 km² (21.5 mi²). 54.7 km² (21.1 mi²) of it is land and 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²) of it (1.90%) is water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 1,673 people, 578 households, and 467 families residing in the town. The population density was 30.6/km² (79.2/mi²). There were 591 housing units at an average density of 10.8/km² (28.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.33% White, 0.36% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.60% Asian, 0.24% from other races, and 0.36% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.02% of the population.
There were 578 households out of which 41.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 71.5% were married couples living together, 6.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 19.2% were non-families. 14.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.89 and the average family size was 3.24.
In the town the population was spread out with 29.6% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 29.0% from 25 to 44, 27.5% from 45 to 64, and 7.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 100.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 99.8 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $60,729, and the median income for a family was $63,487. Males had a median income of $42,065 versus $30,882 for females. The per capita income for the town was $23,175. About 1.5% of families and 1.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 1.8% of those under age 18 and 2.2% of those age 65 or over.
