O Quatrilho is a famous 1995 Brazilian drama film directed by Fábio Barreto. It was adapted from José Clemente Pozenato's novel by Antônio Calmon and Leopoldo Serran. The movie was nominated for the 1996 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, but failed to win. The film stars telenovela actresses Patrícia Pillar and Glória Pires as well as Nip/Tuck actor Bruno Campos. The original soundtrack of the film was composed by classical musician Jacques Morelenbaum with a theme song by pop singer Caetano Veloso.

The film tells the story of two Italian immigrant couples living in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in the early 20th century: Teresa (Patrícia Pillar) & Angelo (Alexandre Paternost) and Pierina (Glória Pires) & Massimo (Bruno Campos). While fighting for survival in the new country, the unexpected love of Massimo and Teresa appears. They react against family and cultural traditions and leave to a new destiny, leaving their partners. Quatrilho is the name of a card game in which the player have to betray his partner in order to become the winner.

  • O Quatrilho was the first Brazilian film in more than 30 years to be nominated to the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. The first Brazilian film nominated to such honor was 1962's O Pagador de Promessas (known as Keeper of Promises in English).
  • The photographer who takes the family picture in the end of the movie is José Clemente Pozenato, the author of the novel in which the movie was based.
  • Few members of the Barreto family stars on small roles, including Fábio himself (as Gaudério).
