O2 Optix
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
O2 Optix, also known as Air Optix in the United Kingdom, is a brand of breathable contact lenses made by CIBA Vision. They are disposable soft contact lenses that are made from silicone hydrogel. In the United States, the lenses are approved for two weeks wear, but in Europe, the lenses are approved for monthly wear. O2 Optix lenses transmit up to five times more oxygen than HEMA-based soft contact lenses. O2 Optix lenses have been FDA approved for extended wear of up to six consecutive nights.

[edit] Voluntary recall
CIBA Vision in the United States of America recalled certain lots of O2 Optix that were sold from September 2006 to December 2006. This is due to these lots falling below CIBA Vision's Ion Permeability standards. Reduced ion permeability in contact lenses my lead to reduced lens movement, symptoms of discomfort and/or foreign body irritation. The following lot numbers are being recalled:
Lot Number | Expiration Date |
---|---|
6644001 | 2011/09 to 2011/11 |
6721262 | 2011/09 to 2011/11 |

[edit] Technology
O2 Optix lenses use silicone hydrogel to increase oxygen movement through the lens.
The rate of oxygen transmissibility is 138 Dk/t. The minimum requirement to prevent stromal anoxia during overnight wear is 125 Dk/t.[citation needed]
