Nyland and Tavastehus County

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nyland and Tavastehus County, Nylands och Tavastehus län or Uudenmaan ja Hämeen lääni, was a County (län) of Sweden (now in modern Finland) from 1634 to 1808, named after Nyland and Tavastehus.

In 1775 a redistricting changed somewhat the outlook of the province. Part of the Satakunta district was joined to Nyland and Tavastehus from the Björneborg County, while the Övre Hollola district went to Kymmene.

After the Treaty of Fredrikshamn in 1809 it continued to be a County of the Grand Duchy of Finland until 1831 when it was split into Nyland County and Tavastehus County respectively. Southern part of Tavastia and whole Nyland became part of the Province of Southern Finland in 1997.
