[edit] Art of France

I love what you've done with the art of France! Many thanks. >>sparkit|TALK<< 13:57, August 16, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] (Hollywood does not equal "studio system" per se)

Yes, you are right, I was tempted to link it out of frustration that there is no article on the studio system (which I am sure, is a European phenomenon as well), thanks for removing the link. I thought it would be rather harmless because I posted it on a talk page. I find it interesting that quite a number of pages link to the studio system entry http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Whatlinkshere/Studio_system , but that no one has written an article about it. The reason is perhaps that the studio system a number of negative connotiations related to commercialism and Hollywood. There is however also a historical background, of which I do not know enough to write the entry. For the time being I have redirected studio system to Hollywood, because, if you check the "what links here page", it most commonly refers to Hollywood --Jahsonic 08:28, 27 August 2005 (UTC)

It should be pointed out that, while a Hollywood redirect isn't ideal, a wholly blank page is worthless. It's still a blue link, so no one will automatically feel inspired to write the article, and no context whatsoever is provided to someone who visits the page. — Lomn | Talk / RfC 05:52:52, 2005-09-03 (UTC)
Thanks for doing the stub... The original redirect to Hollywood was in response to an Auteur theory edit and talk page discussion, but I couldn't let it stand and was planning on coming back to it. Although a redirect to nothing isn't great, I didn't want someone to think that the Hollywood article dealt with the notion of "studio system" in any meaningful way. Anyway, now you've put the stub up, and hopefully this can be expanded. Thanks NYArtsnWords 06:15, 3 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Templates

Please be careful no to confuse governments and history. House of Bourbon is not an article on an era of French history, it is an article on a group of rulers. History is far more than who is ruling a nation at any given time. - SimonP 20:31, September 8, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] French Revolution Template

Hey, I love what you've done to the French Revolution pages. I was wondering if the Template:French Revolution should perhaps be stripped of the entries on French history before and after the Revolution and become specifically a "French Revolution" template? Or if the Template:History of France should also be included on the main page? Also, it might be nice if a tiny picture could be added to the template. --NYArtsnWords 22:28, 8 September 2005 (UTC)

  • I think this is better as it is. Think of it as a "drill-down" from the French History template. A similar template could provide drill-down for any other period that eventually is covered in comparable detail. The idea is that you get detailed coverage on what is closely related, and still get the larger sweep of French history. -- Jmabel | Talk 01:48, September 9, 2005 (UTC)
  • Ah, I see now, Template:History of France has evolved (and grown) and Template:French Revolution has not parallelled it. And Template:History of France has gotten big enough that this approach may no longer be appropriate. Perhaps the appropriate solution would be several "drill-down" templates, along the same principle originally used for Template:French Revolution? Because, frankly, Template:History of France is beginning to push the limits of what is useful. I'm open to suggestions, but I think it the drill-down idea was a good one. -- Jmabel | Talk 05:49, September 9, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Mediaeval French literature

The proposal, as things currently stand, is to merge into the mediaeval French article. Doing my bit to help the process along. Man vyi 17:49, 11 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] WWII in Francophobia

Your work on the WWII section was great but didn't give you some sort of "precedent" privilege, so since the 2.5 figure was grossly wrong I had to correct it. The way you put it afterwards is even better, though :) Jules LT 18:08, 13 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] new collaboration project

You'd you be interested in participating in a new Collaboration project that aims at translating good and featured articles in the French Wikipedia to English (much like the Spanish Translation of the Week)? I'm trying to see if there's enough users interested in this project before creating it. Thank you. CG 17:52, 14 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Greetings

Yes, I'd be happy to do just that! There are a lot of French Renaissance music topics on my to-do list (musique mesurée comes to mind). That Renaissance music article is, well, rather needy, and I haven't gotten around to that one yet. Looking at French Renaissance: nice job! that will be an excellent article. I'll try to conform my writeup to the boundaries of 1494 / 1610. Adding to my to-do list ... :-) Antandrus (talk) 23:33, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

Thanks! It was fun to write that (and probably needs a bit more polishing). If you are expert in medieval French literature, have a look at Guillaume de Machaut -- he was equally famous as a poet and composer, and while I know his music quite well, I haven't written much of that part yet, and I'm not competent to discuss his contributions to French literature. So much to cover in this area, and you know what? It's rather a pleasure that it's relatively uncontentious, and the few people interested can work to their hearts content with little controversy. Best wishes, Antandrus (talk) 02:04, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
Excellent work on Machaut! Thank you! Now time for me to write a bit more about his music ... Cheers, Antandrus (talk) 17:07, 14 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Boulevard Saint Michel

Thanks that's a big improvement over the section I took across from fr.wiki. I'll continue to work on the article over the next few days. Dlyons493 Talk 03:18, 10 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] French Collaboration Project

You showed support for the French Collaboration Project. This week Little boy was chosen to be translated from fr:Little boy. Hope you can help.

[edit] DYK

Updated DYK query Did you know? has been updated. A fact from the article Nicolas des Escuteaux, which you recently created, has been featured in that section on the Main Page. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

[edit] Redirect from Auteur Theory to Auteur theory

I agree with your idea to merge, but you should probably not merge for at least 24 hours after proposing to redirect it in case there is a dispute Betacommand 05:54, 13 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Middle Ages etc.

Thanks for letting me know. You might be right about the Middle Ages capitals - bother! I've done the rest of the centuries on that page. A mixed style page was a "known risk" - there are many thousand section headers on WP with unnecessary caps, I did the 15 most common recently, and am now doing the next 200+. Twentieth Century was in this batch, the others weren't, I guess I should have included them anyway, had I thought of it. Rich Farmbrough 01:10 9 March 2006 (UTC).

PS I'll check the MA thing and revert them if necessary. Rich Farmbrough 01:12 9 March 2006 (UTC).

[edit] French communes

Thanks for adding templates to French communes. Could you use Template:French commune instead of copying the details of the template into each article? In most cases, the easiest way to do so is by cut-and-pasting the corresponding info from the French Wikipedia, and replacing "{{tableau comm|" by "{{French commune|". You will also need to add "|date-dens=" anywhere in the table, and of course anglicize the figures. Just let me know if you have comments. Thanks! olivier 03:26, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] French History

I saw your recent changes at Early Modern France. (Unhappily Wiki history doesn't help to distinguish real modifications and adds of paragraphs.)  But what I saw are good changes.

Furthermore, I see that you are one of the main – if not the main – Wikipedia editor of French history topics in English language. By consulting histories and by meaning the results, I'm obliged to say nothing than "chapeau". That's not an affectation (hypocrisie), but I mean what I say.

For our current dissension, I put forward:  Let's discuss this good-naturedly. I'm always ready to defend my perceptions, but I'm always ready too to yield to others good arguments.
In any case, I hope – at last "à la longue" – we'll can cooperate together for the concern of the French History articles at Wikipedia.en.

Regards,  Paul Martin 00:08, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

Three cheers for your excellent work on French history articles. When I thought about editing WP, I had plans to work on the things you're doing. Just as well I did something else as you're making a better job of it that I would have done. Hurrah ! Angus McLellan (Talk) 17:50, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] June Meetup in New York

Hi, I noticed you are characterized as a New Yorker or someone living in New York City so perhaps you might be in the NYC area in June. If you are interested we are having a meetup for Wikipedians in June in NYC. Take a peek at this and please tell any other Wikipedians that you think might be interested in participating about this event. Thanks. Alex756 02:25, 11 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Advice pls

I have been translating the odd article on the various Phélypeaux and Colberts, but I've decided to do some of the "state structures" ones for the Ancien Régime. I think the one I'm obviously missing at the moment is fr:Département de la Maison du Roi. No bother translating it, but what to call it ? Maison du Roi is taken. I am seriously failing to come up with a meaningful title, so if you have any suggestions I'd love to hear them ! Thanks in advance. Angus McLellan (Talk) 21:55, 8 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Greetings from Paris

Hello! I just came across your quite extensive additions to the Wikipedia:France-related topics notice board - I'd just like to call your attention to the fact that both the Portal:Paris and Paris articles can use some knowledgable contributions - the latter has already been submitted for peer review, and a few 'cleanup' suggestions that, for the moment, I seem to be alone in implementing... please do lend a hand, and put the word out if you can. Thanks! THEPROMENADER 13:59, 17 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Recent contributions

Just to note that I am very impressed with your recent contributions, such as Abel-François Poisson, marquis de Marigny and Secretary of State of the Maison du Roi. Bravo! -- ALoan (Talk) 10:53, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

I have taken the liberty of nominating the latter for WP:DYK on the Main Page - you may like to think about whether any of your other recent excellent contributions are suitable. -- ALoan (Talk) 11:43, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Julie

Hi, Im Julie. I was wondering why you called the change that I made on May 22nd 2006 "vandalism", and why you deleted it. (unsigned comment by 209.71.221.45 (talk))

1. Please sign your posts to discussion pages.
2. My edit on May 22, 2006 reverted the inclusion of the phrase "possibly as gay as David U." by 66.243.87.150 (talk) to the page Male prostitution. This was clearly vandalism.
3. Asking intentionally naive questions is a hallmark of the Internet troll. I will follow the advice Do Not Feed the Trolls from here on out and will treat comments in a similar vein as vandalism of this page. NYArtsnWords 22:29, 19 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] (no title)

Hi NYArtsnWords, I notice that you stay busy with the French stuff, etc. If you ever seek to improve an article, and there is a good German counterpart, I would be willing to do some translation. GilliamJF 18:04, 26 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Grand Conseil vs. Conseil privé

Hi, I saw your contributions at Conseil du Roi. I left a message at Talk:Grand Conseil. Have a look at my message, perhaps you could help. At the moment I am too busy with other things to do the required disambiguation and translation. Ask me if you're in doubt about the meaning of some words or expressions (the National Archives of France paper is a bit dense at times). Hardouin 11:42, 4 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Parlement vs. Parliament

Just a heads up... I noticed CmdrObot has been automatically replacing Parlement with Parliament, which – in the context of pages on the Ancien Régime in France or the Government of France – is a mistake. --NYArtsnWords 03:26, 10 September 2006 (UTC)

Ah, very sorry about that. I'll watch out for the French usage in future. Cheers, CmdrObot 03:34, 10 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Musketeers

I have created a new page for the Musketeers of the Guard of the Maison du Roi, instead of having them at musketeer article which should mainly deal with soldiers armed with a musket. If you give the ok we can remove the information from the musketeer section and make redirects. Carl Logan 10:49, 10 September 2006 (UTC)

I am torn about this. I imagine (perhaps falsely?) that the majority of wiki links to Musketeer have to do with the French institution or with The Three Musketeers, which would lead me to want to keep it as a subheading on the Musketeer page. This would also be in keeping with the German wiki page (which also has a short section on musketeers in Japan). What is more, the Musketeer article is – right now – tiny (most of the information on the use of muskets is found at Musket), so there is no size issue calling for a subpage. Finally, I am not sure Musketeers of the Guard is well enough known as a title; if a subpage is required, maybe Musketeer (France) might be better? Anyway, that's my two cents. -- NYArtsnWords 17:30, 10 September 2006 (UTC)
I cam personally redirect relvant sites there, it is only to go through the What links here section on the musketeer site. I think the name is correct, but it would be best to but a This article is about section at the start of the musketeer article and include them in the disambiguation page. I think that will clear up the confusion.

[edit] Greetings From France

Hello NYArtsnWords - I noticed your involvement in the Wikipedia:France-related topics notice board. I've just made a couple additions to your new "RfC" section. There may be more later.

Your input would much appreciated in a little dispute we've been having over the title of a Paris-related article - are you knowledgable on such matters? Few in English Wikipedia seem to be concerned/aware of the layout/workings of the French commune/department administrative system, and this lacking has turned what should be a simple and obvious question into a long debate. If you could add a knowledgable word about the fact of the matter in the mediation case, it may make the road to a factual conclusion shorter. I for one would be much obliged. Thanks. THEPROMENADER 15:34, 22 September 2006 (UTC)

Thanks a lot for your objective input - it was much needed. Here's to constructive contributions under much calmer climes. This won't be long in coming. Take care, THEPROMENADER 21:00, 23 September 2006 (UTC)
I've set up a table as a sort of vote on the naming affair - I"m not sure if this will have any practical use (is there voting in mediation cases?) but at least it will make it clear where everyone stands in this. If you would like to put a word in too, please do. The table's right there up on top. THEPROMENADER 18:08, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] New portal

Hey, there's a new portal up on French military history. Just thought you should know in case you wanted to link it off the France portal.UberCryxic 22:31, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] FA drive - "Paris"

NYAW,

A few have been trying to get the Paris article to featured status since almost a year now, but there seem to be a lack of knowledgable contributors enough to complete this. Yet it's already passed "A" classification and has had a peer review. Would you be interested in helping to finish the task of getting it ready for a nomination? Would you know of anyone else who could be interested?

Thanks, take care,

THEPROMENADER 14:39, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

I myself will be getting back to this task after the 10th October - in the meantime I'll just be 'tweaking'. I would also like to have others have a go at it - I have already contributed a lot. Do the English Wiki French pages get much contributor traffic in general? Frankly I'm a bit dismayed. Perhaps we should start translating French Wiki articles. Cheers. THEPROMENADER 08:13, 27 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] About my last post in this mediation cabal

As you've probably noticed, a solution has been found for the mediation cabal. When I've talked about people ThePromenader rallied, I didn't mean specifically yourself. Actually, he has sent similar messages to yours to dozens of people. The thing is that ThePromenader constantly described things as being about people lying on Paris official borders, something which isn't true as the article had always specified clearly the official municipalities where each building was located. I've spent all my life in Paris and the only thing I understood from this long experience is that we should never believe that we know most about that city. No matter how long we stayed, years or decades, we are still able to discover huge and unexpected surprises about it. ;-) Metropolitan 21:56, 2 October 2006 (UTC).

NYArtsnWords was right in his answer: Never have I tried to influence the "facts" in any message to anyone - I have simply asked everyone to look at them and help make it possible to edit Wikipedia accordingly. Verifiability is the principle même of Wiki, and having an article title place its content where it isn't is simply not acceptable. What's more, I made damn sure to criticise what's written, not the person - if it is clear that what is written is not fact, yet those who are perfectly aware of this would defend this, they are giving a pretty clear impression of themselves to others, so no need to accuse anyone of painting pictures for them. Cheers. THEPROMENADER 06:49, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] infelicitous link

Your link to Lucan in Georges de Brébeuf was most infelicitous, since until a moment ago, that disambiguation page did not even hint at the existence of that particular Lucan. I've directed the link to the right article and added that article to the disambiguation page that you linked to. Michael Hardy 20:23, 10 October 2006 (UTC)

... you might also want to consider where your link to Norman should point. Take a look at what is now in the article titled Norman. It's dangerous to assume too much about these things without actually looking. Michael Hardy 20:26, 10 October 2006 (UTC)

I admit that I sometimes forget to check a link. Thanks for pointing those out. --NYArtsnWords 00:06, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Comments

"I noticed that you removed comments on a few films... why?"

  • If I took them out it was either because they were inaccurate or overly wordy. The lists were getting quite unruly and hard to read which is why I started tabling them, so I tried to balance informativity (is that a word? It is now I guess) with brevity and clarity. [edit] Hi

Hi there, I found your name at the French wikipedians notice board and was wondering if you could help me out. I'm currently putting in some work on the Het Wilhelmus article and was wondering if you could translate Autre chanson de la ville de Chartres assiégée par le prince de Condé for me? Thanks in advance.Rex 18:02, 17 December 2006 (UTC)

Rex - as the context from the Het Wilhelmus article makes clear, the title means : Another song about the city of Chartres under siege by the Prince de Condé (Louis I de Bourbon, prince de Condé)" during the Wars of Religion.--NYArtsnWords 21:05, 17 December 2006 (UTC)
