Nya Upsala

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nya Upsala (New Upsala or New Uppsala) was an early Scandinavian settlement in Pine Lake, Wisconsin founded by Gustaf Unonius. It is also referred to as the 'Pine Lake Settlement'. This 'Pine Lake' was located near the present location of the Town of Merton (town), Wisconsin in the North Central Section of Waukesha County, Wisconsin (and is not to be confused with the current Pine Lake, Wisconsin, a town located in Oneida County, Wisconsin). Goals of the community included a University in homage to the Uppsala University in Uppsala, Sweden. (United States District Judge A.F. St. Sure's grandfather was an early settler at Pine Lake.)
