NY's 25th District, the Fighting 25th!

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

New York's 25th congressional district, in the heart of central New York, includes Onondaga County, Wayne County, and portions of Monroe and Cayuga counties. Syracuse is wholly in the district, as are some of the Rochester suburbs. The district consists of about 100 miles of Lake Ontario shoreline as well as Oneida Lake, Onondaga Lake, and the Finger Lakes of Otisco and Skaneateles. The Erie Canal once cut across the region. The majority of this region is agricultural, with an emphasis on wineries, apple farms, and dairies.

The 25th district is home to several large corporations, including Eastman Kodak, Wegmans Food Markets, Bausch & Lomb, and Welch Allen.

Syracuse was an important stop on the Underground Railroad. Wayne County houses the Woman's Rights National Historical Park. The Mormon Church has its beginnings here, too.

Democracy has existed here since the time of the Iroquois Confederacy, the Haudenosaunee. The six great Indian Nations, the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca, and Tuscarora, came together on the shores of Onondaga Lake and became the first participatory democracy.

Onondaga Lake, at one time considered the most polluted lake in the world, has slipped. She is now just in the top 20. Abused by manufacturers for decades, cleanup plans still cannot be agreed upon. Sometime in the next decade, her shores may become home to the largest mall on the continent. Robert Congel has plans for his Destiny USA, an add-on, expansion of the current Carousel Center. This is currently the only planned major development for an otherwise economically depressed area.

This once great area is now represented in Washington by Congressman James T. Walsh. The incumbent appears on his way to another victory. He has been serving the district since 1988.
