Nutripathy

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nutripathy is a form of alternative medicine that considers pH to be critical to maintaining good health and resistance to disease. Nutripathy maintains that modern lifestyle and diet can upset the balance of our bodies pH, making us more susceptible to disease and poor health.[1] The correct balance is 80% alkaline to 20% acid[2], the same as planet earth. The reason for the ratio of 80%-20% is that it is said that it takes four parts of alkaline food to neutralize one part of acid food. Alkalinity is largely derived from the presence of alkaline minerals like potassium, calcium, magnesium, sodium and iron. As an example of how the theory is supposed to work, if a person eats too much food containing sugars (which are acid-forming), then the body has to use alkaline minerals like magnesium to neutralize the acids. This means that there will not be enough magnesium left over for other needs, like the nervous system. thus, a person can become deficient in magnesium simply by consuming too much sugar.[3]

Foods are classified either as acid forming (making the body more acidic) or alkaline forming (making the body more alkaline) by measuring the acidity of the oxidized remains of our food. Examples of acid-forming foods include grains, meats, fish, nuts, processed foods and sugars of all kinds, while alkaline-forming foods include vegetables and most fruits, especially citrus fruits.[4]
