Nutley Public Schools

Nutley Public Schools are a comprehensive community public school district that serves students from Nutley, in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The district spent $9,959 per student for the 2004-2005 school year. This was broken down with 55% going towards instructional expenses, 12% towards administration, 11% for support services, 11% for operations and maintenance, and 12% for other expenses.

The district was selected as one of the top "100 Best Communities for Music Education in America 2005" by the American Music Conference.[1]

Nutley has five public elementary schools which educate students in grades K-6. Elementary students in Grades 3 and 4 were tested in Math and Language Arts with the New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge (NJ ASK) for the 2004-2005 school year. Students in Grade 4 were also tested in Science.

Spring Garden, located at 59 South Spring Garden Avenue, was constructed in 1917 and was added on to in 1927[2].
Spring Garden currently has an enrollment of 425 students. Ninety-four percent of the student body is white, 3% is Hispanic, 2% is Asian, and less than 1% is black. English is the primary language spoken at home (88%). Four percent speak Spanish, 1% speak each Vietnamese, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, and Tagalog, and 5% speak other languages. Thirteen percent of Spring Garden's students are students with disabilities.
Fifty-two percent of Spring Garden's teachers have Bachelor's degrees, and 48% have Master's degrees. There is a student-administrator ratio of 425:1 and a student-teacher ratio of 9:1. The average class size for all grades is 19 students (state average 19).

Yantacaw was built in 1902 and is the oldest of the elementary schools still in use. In 1929, an addition was built to accommodate the growing population of Nutley. It is located at 20 Yantacaw Place[3].
Yantacaw currently has an enrollment of 503 students. Eighty percent of the student body is white, 10% is Hispanic, 9% is Asian, and 2% is black. English is the primary language spoken at home (89%). Three percent speak Spanish, 1% speak each Albanian, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, and Polish, and 4% speak other languages. Three percent of Yantacaw's students are English language learners and 6% are students with disabilities.
Thirty-three percent of Yantacaw's teachers have Bachelor's degrees, and 67% have Master's degrees. There is a student-administrator ratio of 503:1 and a student-teacher ratio of 12:1. The average class size for all grades is 22 students (state average 19).

Radcliffe, located at 379 Bloomfield Avenue, is the newest elementary school and was built in 1955[4].
Radcliffe currently has an enrollment of 362 students. Eighty-seven percent of the student body is white, 6% is Hispanic, and 6% is Asian. English is the primary language spoken at home (86%). Five percent speak Spanish, 2% speak Italian, 1% speak each Vietnamese, Mandarin, and Portuguese, and 4% speak other languages. Two percent of Radcliffe's students are English language learners and 8% are students with disabilities.
Fifty-seven percent of Radcliffe's teachers have Bachelor's degrees, and 43% have Master's degrees. There is a student-administrator ratio of 362:1 and a student-teacher ratio of 9:1. The average class size for all grades is 20 students (state average 19).

Lincoln was built in 1915, with further construction occurring in 1929. It is located at 301 Harrison Street[5].
Lincoln currently has an enrollment of 481 students. Seventy-four percent of the student body is white, 13% is Hispanic, 10 is Asian, and 2% is Black. English is the primary language spoken at home (69%). Seven percent speak Spanish, 2% speak each Gujarati, Tagalog, and Italian, 1% speak Portuguese, and 18% speak other languages. Two percent of Lincoln's students are English language learners. Because Lincoln has the most dedicated special education classes of all of the elementary schools, 23% of its students are classified as having disabilities, nearly twice the state average.
Fifty-five percent of Lincoln's teachers have Bachelor's degrees, and 45% have Master's degrees. There is a student-administrator ratio of 481:1 and a student-teacher ratio of 8:1. The average class size for all grades is 17 students (state average 19).

Washington was constructed in 1911, the second oldest elementary school still in use in Nutley. It is located at 155 Washington Avenue[6].
Washington currently has an enrollment of 402 students. Sixty-nine percent of the student body is white, 15% is Hispanic, 14% is Asian, and less than 1% is black. English is the primary language spoken at home (72%). Fourteen percent speak Spanish, 3% speak Gujarati, 1% speak each Hindi, Arabic, Italian, and Korean, and 8% speak other languages. Six percent of Washington's students are English language learners and 8% are students with disabilities.
Sixty percent of Washington's teachers have Bachelor's degrees, and 40% have Master's degrees. There is a student-administrator ratio of 402:1 and a student-teacher ratio of 9:1. The average class size for all grades is 19 students (state average 19).

All students in grades 7 and 8 attend Franklin Middle School. Located at 325 Franklin Avenue, Franklin Middle School served as Nutley's high school until 1959[7].
Franklin Middle School has a current enrollment of 687 students. All students in grade 8 take the state-mandated GEPA (Grade Eight Proficiency Assessment). The 2005 results show 90% of students proficient in Science (state average 77%), 80% of students proficient in Language Arts literacy (state average 72%), and 72% proficient in Math (state average 62%).
All of Franklin Middle School's teachers are fully certified. Forty-three percent have bachelor's degrees and 57% have masters degrees. There is a student-administrator ratio of 344:1 and a student-faculty ratio of 12:1.
Franklin Middle School's student population is 79% white, 10% Hispanic, 9% Asian, and 2% Black. Eighty-five percent of the students speak English at home, 7% speak Spanish, and Gujarati, Italian, Tagalog, Mandarin, and Korean are each spoken by 1%. Only 1% of the students are English-language learners. Nine percent of the students participate in the free/reduced price lunch program, and 12% are students with disabilities.
