[edit] Synopsis

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

Earl decides to let Crabman choose which task to complete next on his list. He chooses number one, "Stole ten dollars from a guy at Camden Market". While watching a security tape with him stealing the money, Earl discovers the identity of the man (Paul) as well as another shocking secret: he was going to use the money Earl stole to buy the same winning lottery ticket. Earl decides that he must give Paul all of the winnings, including the money he spent. Randy hates the idea of being poor again, but Earl assures him karma will make everything okay, as long as he keeps completing items on the list.

Randy finds some money in the gutter and uses it to buy a lottery ticket, but it turns out he bought a joke lottery ticket and thus wins nothing. Desperate for money, Earl sells his El Camino for $1,200 (USD) but realizes he still owes Paul and prepares to bring him the money. Randy doesn't want him to, and the two begin to fight. While fighting, the bus they are on hits Paul. They visit Paul in the hospital, and Earl learns more about the day he was hit: Paul found the ticket and later got hit by the same driver who hit Earl; the ticket then drifted around for several days until it was found once again by Earl. Paul also reveals that the old lady who injured Earl and himself was also the one responsible for Paul getting hit by the bus (she sticks her bus map in front of the driver's face). Paul has a revelation similar to Earl's (he refers to the old woman as "Old Lady Karma"), only he realizes that he should not have the money because he does not like the person it makes him. He gives Earl back the lottery money, Earl buys back his El Camino, and things go back to normal.

[edit] Quotes

  • As she did in the episode "Barn Burner", when Catalina berates Joy in Spanish she is actually talking directly to the viewer:
Joy: ...which means I'm legal, unlike you (points at Catalina)
Catalina (angrily): Con esto concluimos nuestra primera temporada de "Earl". Estamos muy agradecidos con su acompañiamento. Anticipamos verlos el próximo otoño. This concludes our first season of "Earl". We are very grateful to have had you with us. We'll see you this Fall.
Joy: Blah, blah, blah

[edit] Trivia

  • The scene where Randy finds money in the gutter and uses it to buy a lottery ticket is a parody of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, right down to the music and dialogue.
  • The series creator Greg Garcia made a cameo: He plays Maggie's father in the scene where Earl is dancing with Maggie.
  • When Randy and Earl go to see Paul at his house a Gibson Les Paul guitar can be seen in the background.
  • In the same scene, Randy completes a Rubik's Cube
  • In the flashback about art school, Earl is shown wearing a Metallica t-shirt. In the episode Bounty Hunter, he wore that same shirt when when he and Joy got back from a Metallica concert
