Novi Zagreb

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Novi Zagreb (literally "New Zagreb") is the part of the city of Zagreb that is located to the south of the Sava river.

It is mostly residential, consisting of blocks of flats and tower blocks that were built in the Communist era (1945-1990).

It is formed by two 'quarters' ('četvrti'): Novi Zagreb Istok (New Zagreb East) and Novi Zagreb Zapad (New Zagreb West).

Expansion of Novi Zagreb was started by Zagreb mayor Večeslav Holjevac, when he moved 'Zagreb fair' ('Zagrebački Velesajam') out of the centre of the city to the west bank of river Sava in 1953.
