Nottingham University Christian Union
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
NUCU, also known as the Nottingham University Christian Union, is a student organisation affiliated to the Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship (UCCF) . It is an interdenomenational evangelical society that encourages its members to "live for Jesus, speak for Jesus" at the university. It is similar to other university Christian Unions (CUs) such as the CICCU (Cambridge), OICCU (Oxford) and DICCU (Durham), all of which aim for their members' spiritual growth, commitment to biblical truth, evangelism and worldwide involvement.
NUCU has a membership of between 400-500 people, making it one of the largest Christian Unions in the United Kingdom.
It puts on regular events aiming to explaining the Christian gospel to as many students as possible - including weekly "lunchbars" (a talk on a contemporary issue and a free lunch), "first contact" evangelism, annual events such as a Summer Barbeque on the Downs, a Christmas Carol Service and a 'Mission Week' packed full of high-profile events. There are also weekly evangelistic cafes run for international students - called 'Juice' (on Jubilee campus), 'Edge' and 'Globe'.
NUCU also puts on events which aren't directly evangelistic, but seek to help the CU fulfil its aims in equipping its members to live for Jesus and speak for Jesus. These events include Equip: the Friday Night Meeting, nine20 groups (see below) and prayer meetings.

[edit] Structure
The society is guided by a 9-member 'Exec' committee, which includes the President, Vice President, Treasurer, Evangelism Secretary, Prayer Secretary, International Secretary, General Secretary, Discipleship Coordinator and Small Groups Coordinator. Additionally, a host of small group Bible study leaders, teams, and various others allow the CU to function on a day-to-day basis.
The small groups in the CU are called nine20 groups, after a verse in the Bible (Luke 9:20). They are the nucleus of the Christian Union, where fellowship is shared by Christians in halls and in off-campus areas of Nottingham in the vicinity of the university.
The CU has regularly invited some of the most respected evangelical leaders to speak at its meetings, and in recent months and years these have included Christopher Ash, Lindsay Brown, Jonathan Stephen, Terry Virgo, David Jackman, Vaughan Roberts, Jonathan Fletcher, Lindsay Brown, Hugh Palmer and Roger Carswell.
[edit] UCCF
As of September 2006, the CU will have two UCCF Staff Workers and three Relay Workers. These people assist with the running of NUCU and other CUs in the East Midlands.
[edit] Focus
NUCU places its primary emphasis on biblical teaching and proclamation evangelism, restricting its activities to such events that support these aims, as described above.
