Norwegian Council for Africa

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Norwegian Council for Africa (formerly the Norwegian Council for Southern Africa) was established in 1967 to spearhead the Norwegian struggle against Apartheid. Through information and advocacy work in Norway, the NCA worked for democracy and justice in Southern Africa. The NCA collaborated closely with international and African grassrot movements to put pressure on national governments and companies to isolate the Apartheid regimes. With the multiparty elections in South-Africa in 1994, which marked the end of Apartheid, the NCA expanded its field of interest to include all of Sub-Saharan Africa. Today, the NCA's main objective is to work for economic, social and political justice in and for Africa. This is done mainly through spreading information and knowledge that is just, nuanced and complementary; through creating, participating and influencing different forums and through building and participating in networks in Norway and with Africa.

[edit] Information work

The NCA argues that the covering of events and political developments in Africa is often one-dimensional and stereotypical. Information work is thus essential to balance this misrepresentation. Through its work, the Norwegian Council for Africa disseminates information and knowledge about Africa. It also seeks to enshuring an active and coherent Norwegian policy towards Africa - both directly and through international channels. Norwegian policy and involvement towards Africa demand insight and understanding. The NCA publications are therefore given high priority, and seek to offer well-founded analysis on pertinant issues. The NCA publishes annual books on Africa, is a co-founder and co-publisher of the World Magazine X, participates in networks and development forums, organizes seminars and campaigns, and does media-related work. In all its activities, the NCA seeks to communicate perspectives that are founded on balanced facts and which highlights the basic structures and long term settings for change.
