[edit] Many ups and downs
Norway has been a loyal participant in the Eurovision Song Contest. Since their first entrance in 1960, they have only been absent twice: in 1970, when they boycotted the contest over disagreements about the voting structure, and in 2002, when they did not qualify. Their loyalty, however, has not been rewarded with much success. The country, in fact, holds the unfortunate distinction of having scored the most "null poeng" (zero points) in competition history.

Norway was very much struggling to get recognition from its European fellows all the way up until 1985 when the first greater success came through Bobbysocks and the song La det swinge (Let It Swing). This was a particularly popular win, as even the host of that year's competition admitted to hoping that Norway would win to make up for its previously bad record. Since that time, Eurovision participation has been an emotional roller-coaster for Norwegians. A very miserable period during the four year period 1989 till 1992, was followed by exceptional success with the absolute peak in 1995 through the mainly instrumental Celtic-influenced ethno-piece Nocturne performed by Secret Garden, receiving six douzes, enough to win the 1995 contest that year, a song which forced a rule-change due to the comparative lack of lyrics in it[citation needed].
Having come in their usual placing of last in 2004, Norway entered the 2005 contest with hair metal band Wig Wam and their song In My Dreams. The song, as well as the performance featuring exuberant choreography and costumes, became a crowd favourite and saw the band make the top 10, earning Norway automatic qualification for the final in 2006. The 2006 entry Alvedansen ended up on 14th place, and Norway has to enter the semifinal of 2007.
