[edit] Facilities

The NPU campus is situated in a high-technology office park, in the midst of numerous corporations and information technology companies; also, pertinent to note, is its proximity to the high-tech center of Silicon Valley as well as the campuses of Stanford University and the University of California, Berkeley.

The campus buildings house the classrooms and meeting rooms; administrative and faculty offices; the library and reading rooms; several electronics, communications, database, and simulation laboratories; as well as a game room and other student facilities. The NPU dormitories are located just off campus in the neighboring residential area.

[edit] History

Drs. Ramsey Carter and Barbara Brown established the Northwestern Polytechnic University (NPU) on January 2, 1984, perceiving a dearth of high quality engineering schools in the San Francisco Bay Area. NPU was soon thereafter incorporated as a California nonprofit public benefit institution. Because of her knowledge of education administration, Brown was appointed NPU's first president in June 1984.

NPU grew in parallel with Silicon Valley's high tech industries. To address the lack of engineers in the computer industry, NPU opened its Computer Systems Engineering programs at both the Bachelor and Master levels in 1987. Under high-spirited teamwork, NPU grew quickly from a budding school of a few students and faculty in 1984 to a well-established one by 1989. February 23, 1989 marked a milestone as NPU attained full institutional recognition from the California Department of Education.

Brown and Carter retired on March 31, 1991. The university's Board then nominated and appointed Dr. George Hsieh, then the incumbent Dean of Academic Affairs and former Graduate Division Chair, as the new president of NPU the following day.

In January 1998, the ACICS (Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools), http://www.acics.org - accredited NPU to award Bachelor (Baccalaureate) and Masters degrees.
