Northumberland Regional High School (NRHS) is a Canadian secondary school located in Alma, Nova Scotia. The school is also located in the Celtic region of the CCRSB "Family of Schools." The school's official colours are red, white and black. The mascot for the school is a bird, specifically a Nighthawk named Squawk. The sports teams from NRHS are called the Northumberland Nighthawks. Students that attend the school come from the western part of Pictou County, as well as the nearby towns of Stellarton and Westville. The school was founded in 2003, replacing West Pictou District High, Stellarton High School, and Westville High School. NRHS is fed by two middle schools, Highland Consolidated Middle School and West Pictou Middle School. The two schools feed into population at NRHS of almost 1200. In 2007, Northumberland started airing video announcements. They currently air every Monday, Tuesday, and Friday.
[edit] Students' Council
With the help of Stephanie Rae-Cameron and former principal Preston Lockhart NRHS now has one of the largest and most active Student’s Council in Nova Scotia, if not Canada. The Students Council has over 80 members who raise between 12 and 15 thousand dollars a year for the community. The Council also purchases sports facilities, supports dances and many other fun events in the school. With the promotion of Preston Lockhart to Human Resources Director for CCRSB and Stephanie Rae-Cameron receiving an administration position at West Pictou, Ruth-Ann Murry will being leading the council into the 2006-2007 school year.
Northumberland’s student’s council is run on a volunteer basis with an executive and two co-presidents at its core. The executive is comprised of several committee heads, the student’s council adviser, and the co-presidents (elected, by entire population). The executive handles the major decision making of the council and keeps track of the council’s finances. The executive also discusses, approves, or declines proposals for fundraising of the various sports teams and other activates, as well as the formation of new clubs and committees.
